Signs Of Dementia: How Does Coffee Help With Alzheimer's Disease

The signs of dementia are changes in a person’s mood, behavior, and their personality. The mental functions associated with reasoning, memory, and thinking is affected by dementia. Dementia is not really a disease, but the symptoms caused by diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Dementia is not always brought on by Alzheimer’s. Other conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, kidney, lung and liver diseases can cause dementia. Also, head injuries can cause dementia.

Some years ago I worked as a certified nurse’s assistant in a local elderly care facility. We had special procedures in place when caring for those who exhibited signs of dementia to protect them from harm. For instance there were special monitoring devices used to help keep them safe. Some clients would actually attempt to leave the facility due to their dementia.

How Coffee May Help with Alzheimer’s

Scientists say they are not exactly sure how coffee can hinder the development of Alzheimer’s, but this is their theory. We have a protein in our brains known as beta-amyloid. What can happen with the protein is that to much of it can accumulate in the brain. It is not being metabolized sufficiently.

Coffee inhibits the production of beta-amyloid. Our bodies can now metabolize the protein being produced, so there is nothing extra to clog the brain. The research was conducted by Dr. Chuanhai Cao, who is working with the University of South Florida’s College of Pharmacy and Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute in Tampa.

He recommends at least three eight ounce cups of coffee per day. Dr.Cao stated, "The results from this study, along with our earlier studies on Alzheimer's in mice, are very consistent in indicating that moderate daily caffeine/coffee intake throughout adulthood should appreciably protect against Alzheimer's disease later in life."

Alzheimer’s and the Signs of Dementia

Alzheimer’s disease is the number one neurodegenerative disease. The statistics from the Alzheimer’s Association are that one in eight older Americans are afflicted with the disease. It is the sixth leading cause of death in America.

Many of us may have thought that Alzheimer’s disease only involved the loss of a person’s memory. The research is now showing there are other signs of dementia associated with Alzheimer’s. Some of these symptoms may surprise you.

People with dementia have difficulty handling financial matters. A person who once made sound financial decisions all of a sudden can no longer do so.

People who suffer from dementia can fall and trip over themselves. Frequent falls have been attributed to early signs of Alzheimer’s.

An American Academy of Neurology study shows that people with dementia don’t understand sarcasm and sarcasm is an intricate part of our American culture. This symptom surprised me, however it makes total sense.

People can begin losing their sense of social norms, disregarding the law. Yes, one of the signs of dementia is law breaking.

Losing empathy is another sign. People who have been nice and polite all their lives suddenly start to say and do things which are inappropriate with no concern or regret. They have lost their ability to discern what is acceptable and what is not.

Poor hygiene is definitely one of the signs of dementia. Someone you know who has always been a clean person and a smart dresser all of a sudden disregards their appearance. This is one of the more obvious signs of Alzheimer’s.

I’m grateful for the health benefits of coffee. It makes me enjoy it even more. What about you?
