Type 2 Diabetes-Research Shows Coffee Lowers Your Risk

Well now, does gourmet coffee lower our risk for type 2 diabetes? This question came up in my family about whether or not drinking coffee would have a positive effect for diabetes because I do have family members with this condition.

Gourmet Coffee and Diabetes

According to the American Diabetes Association, type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. The disease causes the body to not produce an appropriate amount of insulin, and we need insulin to turn glucose into energy.

Diabetes attacks the nervous system. It can cause eye disease and heart disease. If diabetes is left untreated it can cause a number of other serious health problems. It can cause severe constipation and diarrhea. The digestive system can be damaged, and the proper healing of wounds can be impaired.

Here’s how that cup of java can help reduce the risk of diabetes. Scientific research has discovered that the chlorogenic acid found in coffee reduces the levels of blood glucose and can actually increase insulin sensitivity.

Chlorogenic acid is one of the main polyphenols in coffee. These polyphenols are antioxidants that improve communication between the cells in our bodies. This organic chemical signaling between our cells aids in tissue repair, homeostasis and immunity. Homeostasis is the state of balance in the body where all our systems are working well together.

American College of Physicians

The Annals of Internal Medicine which was established by the American College of Physicians has compiled data on the subject. They have determined that the consumption of coffee, whether caffeinated or decaffeinated reduces the risk of diabetes by 5% to 10%. Those numbers may seem small, but not when it comes to our health.

Something is better than nothing. So, does gourmet coffee have an anti-diabetic effect? Well….according to the studies, the answer is yes. Will it work for everyone? Probably not…Everything isn’t for everybody. However it is good to know that there is a health benefit in coffee where type 2 diabetes is concerned. As always…enjoy your coffee.
